What is Lymphatic System?

Lymphatic system is a part of our immune system that has enormous functions. The most common function is to protect body from any kind of illnesses (immune defense). Lymph is almost similar to plasma constitutes cellular debris, waste product together with protein and bacteria. It is defines as the network of tissues, vessels and organs work in integrity to watery, colorless fluid that is lymph into circulatory system. Around 20 liters of plasma circulates in arteries and capillaries everyday.

Lymphatic system mainly has three functions:

  • Fluid balance: Lymphatic system returns excess protein and fluids from tissues and cells that cannot return through the blood vessels.
  • Absorption: Lymph absorbs fats and proteins from intestine and return it back to blood.
  • Protection: lymphatic system forms and releases lymphocytes (white blood cells) and other cell to fight against foreign invaders like bacteria, virus, fungus etc.
  • Lymphatic system transport and helps in removal of waste products and abnormal cells from the lymph.

Constituent of lymphatic system:

  • Lymph
  • Lymphatic vessels
  • Collecting duct
  • Spleen (filters and stores blood, formation of White blood cells)
  • Thymus (matures specific type of White blood cells and helps in scavenging)
  • Tonsils and adenoids (taps pathogens from air we breathe and food and kills them-fist line of defense)
  • Bone marrow (formations of WBC, RBC and platelets takes palce)
  • Peyer’s patches (lymph nodes in small intestine

Ayurveda and lymphatic System:

“Rasa dhatu” is compared with the lymphatic system. Ras dhatu is the essence of nutrition circulating through the arteries. It is mentioned as lymph, plasma or simple quoted as nutrition in circulation. It helps in detoxifying the body, delivering nutrients like fats, proteins that provides energy and prevents oneself from bodily stresses and diseases. Its constitute most of the immunity of a person. Due to external factors like stress or poor eating habits there is accumulation of Ama (toxins) that impaired the formation of Rasa Dhatu or other words lymph nodes in the gut gets congested compromising Immunity and energy leading to many diseases and various health issues.

Lymphedema: lymphatic system functioning is impaired. Drainage Is not proper leads to accumulation of fluid that further causes swelling in arm or legs known as Lymphedema.

Symptoms:

  • Tender lymph nodes
  • Tight, hard skin
  • Excessive fluid may leak up through skin
  • Fever

Lymphoma: lymphomas are the cancer of  the lymphatic system. It is regarded as most dreadful condition of the lymphatic system. Hodgkin Lymphoma is a type of Lymphoma that specifically affects B lymphocytes. And Non Hodgkin Lymphoma can rise from B or T lymphocytes.

Ways in Ayurveda to boost up Lymphatic Drainage:

SLEEP APNEA

Understanding Sleep Apnea: sleep disorder is a serious health condition that causes temporary stoppage of breathing while sleeping. Or else we can say that breathing tends to stops and starts again and again. Brain wakes you up while you stop breathing as a protective mechanism but it prevents healthy sound sleep. This condition often leads to serious complications if not treated. Sleep apnea are may be of particularly three types:

Pneumonia is an inflammation of airways of one or both the lungs. The air spaces are filled with purulent material (pus) or fluid causing the cough reflex with phlegm or pus. These toxins or ama blocked the srotas (microchannels) of the body results in the adulturating the Agni (digestive Fire).  Spreading the Agni throughout the body from its place Kostha (stomach), pushing heat towards the skin resulting in rise of body temperature. WHAT ARE PLANT PROTEINS?

Plant protein is the protein which is present in plants only. It is not available in sea animals or land animals. It is highly nutritious and is found in variety of sources such as tofu, pulses, legumes, nuts, seeds, beans, peas, certain grains, tempeh and seitan. They provide not only protein but are a rich source of fiber, vitamins and minerals. Pulses are the leguminous plants which include lentils, chickpeas, different types of beans and split peas. Tofu, tempeh and TVP (texturize vegetable protein) are the processed foods and are used as a substitute of meat. Some vegetables like asparagus, broccoli, kale, mushrooms and potatoes are also a good source of proteins.

LENTILS

Nuts are a good source of proteins. Almonds, pistachios, walnuts, cashews and hazelnuts are rich in proteins. 10-15 nuts a day can be a god source of protein and fiber. They also contain unsaturated fatty acids which help in lowering of cholesterol and thus good for heart health. They can be added in diet like in smoothies, salads or on veggies.

QUINOA

Quinoa is a whole grain with a high-protein content and also contain other nutrients such as iron, magnesium, manganese, etc. It is also high in fiber content. It is thus a complete protein. SHINGLES

WHAT IS SHINGLES?

Shingles is an infection which is caused by varicella-zoster virus. It is also known as herpes zoster virus. There occur skin rashes on body which are very painful. The same virus causes chickenpox also. Shingles can occur anywhere on body but it most commonly appears on one side of torso. It appears in a single stripe of blisters. People who had chickenpox in the past can develop shingles. Even after the treatment of chickenpox, the virus remains inside the body remaining dormant in the nervous system. Then it gets reactivated as shingles.

Shingles is not fatal but it is very painful. Even after the disappearance of the blisters, the pain of shingles remains for a long time. Treatment of shingles involves certain medications and maintaining cleanliness. However, vaccines are also available, they help in lowering the risk of contracting shingles.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF SHINGLES?

The causal organism is varicella-zoster virus. It also causes chickenpox. After the recovery of chickenpox, the virus enters the nervous system and remains inactive there. When this virus gets activated, this leads to occurrence of shingles. The virus travels along the nerve pathways and produces blisters at nerve endings. The reason of the activation of shingles is however, unknown.

WHAT ARE THE RISK FACTORS OF SHINGLES?

The factors which increase the risk of developing shingles are:

  • People above the age of 50 years are more prone to shingles
  • Weakened immune system
  • Prolonged use of steroids
  • Stress

Endometriosis is a female reproductive disorder in which endometrial layer is present outside the uterus. Endometrium is the innermost lining of the uterus. It becomes thick during each menstrual cycle, then breaks down and bleeds out during each menstrual cycle. In endometriosis, this tissue grows in fallopian tubes, ovaries and pelvic wall. The tissue can be found beyond the pelvis also. The tissue lining the uterine cavity flows outside the body during menstrual bleeding but the tissue present in the other organs becomes trapped. It has no way to exit the body.

Endometriosis is a painful condition in which there occurs heavy menstrual bleeding. There can be fertility problems also. When the tissue is present in ovaries, cysts like structures called endometriomas are formed. Nodules, adhesions and scar tissue also form in tissues.
