Loss of Cognitive functioning like remembering , thinking, orientation, comprehension, calculation, learning capacity, language and reasoning to such an extent that it tempers with daily activities and life of a person. It also effects relationship, behavior and feelings of person.

Dementia is not a single disease but results from a variety of diseases and injuries that primarily or secondarily affect the brain like Alzheimer’s disease.

The disease is incorrectly referred to as ‘senility or ‘senile dementia’ .

It have physical, social, economical and psychological affect not only on person suffering but also on family and society.


Damage to the brain cell causes dementia in a person. It effects the nerve cells of brain that hampers the ability of brain to communicate with its various areas.

Dementia can also result from blockage of the blood flow to brain, depriving brain from oxygen and nutrients leads to brain tissue death. Some dementia are irreversible and continues to worsen with time.

Some medical conditions like depression, alcohol abuse, vitamin deficiency etc that affects brain can also leads to formation of dementia. Thinking and memory problems caused by above conditions are reversible with proper treatment.


The symptoms of dementia are divides into 3 stages :

EARLY STAGE: Common symptoms includes:

  • Lose of track of time
  • Getting lost in familiar places
  • Absentmindedness

MIDDLE STAGE: The symptoms become more clear in this stage:

  • Increased difficult in communication
  • Forgetting latter information or events
  • Help needed in personal care
  • Experience confusion while at home
  • Repeating questions
  • Change in behavior

LATE STGE: Stage of near total dependence and inactivity.

  • Difficulty in walking
  • Increased dependence on others for personal care
  • Becoming oblivious of time and place
  • Difficulty in recognizing friends and relatives
  • Change in behavior escalate and include aggression.

According to ayurveda dementia developed due to imbalance in three doshas vata, pitta and kapha due to nidana sevana.  Mainly aggravation of prana vata  have a considerable role in dementia.

1. Brodley Syrup:
