As it is very well understood by the name chronic fatigue syndrome is a disorder characterized by tiredness or extreme fatigue that last at least for 6 months, persists even on rest and with unexplained underlying medical condition. The fatigue worsens with mental and physical activity. Medically this term is referred to as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) or Systemic exertion intolerance disease (SEID). The causes of chronic fatigue Syndrome are unknown but it can be due to combination of psychological stress, viral infection etc. It is more common in women of age 40s and 50s  but can happen in men also.

What causes chronic Fatigue Syndrome:

  • Physical and emotional trauma
  • Impaired immune system
  • Stress
  • Hormonal imbalance (hypothalamus, pituitary or adrenal glands)
  • Viral infection (Epstein-Barr virus, human herpes virus 6)
  • Environmental factors
  • Genetic predisposition

Signs and symptoms:

  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • Unexplained muscle or joint pain
  • Not feeling fresh after a good 7-8 hours of sleep
  • Extreme exhaustion after physical and mental exercise
  • Unable to concentrate
  • Dizziness that worsens with moving, sitting or lying down
  • Swollen or tender lymph nodes of neck armpits
  • Loss of memory

Ayurveda say about Chronic Fatigue Syndrome:

Ayurveda has listed combination of enormous reasons for chronic Fatigue Syndrome. It starts with impairment of the Agni (digestive fire). Low or weak digestive fire leads to unhealthy formation of Dhatus (body tissues), aggravation of doshas predominantly vata dosha and accumulation of ama (toxins) inside the body. Vata dosha impaired the functioning of nervous system, sleep, bone tissues etc. As a result of impaired dhatu formation ojas (immunity) is also impaired. Ojas is known as essence of the digested food. It provides endurance and psychological stability. Ojas is a power that is used by body to provide nourishment to higher state of consciousness. As body and mind are connected to each other for their integrated functioning.
